Book: 2.5/5 | Series: 2/5
Before we dive in with the comparison I need to start off by asking, did anyone else think that The One’s logo looks like Kogan? I know it’s a universal symbol but the way they’ve used it, it was the first thing that popped into my head and now I can’t unsee it.
Does the series follow the book?
Short answer: no.
The premise of “The One” is the same. It is an algorithm that will match your DNA to someone that you are guaranteed and destined to fall in love with. They both focus more on the thrills rather than exploring how relationships have changed which is mostly glossed over. The Netflix series has loosely picked characters and ideas from the book and formed its own plot centered around the “Match Your DNA” CEO villain where her lies and decisions eventually catch up to her. It definitely had a better focus on characters, with 3 connected storylines vs 5 mostly independent ones.
Read it or Watch it?
Read it. But only just. It definitely hooked me more than the series. But that being said if you’re looking for a mindless read or a tv show in the background that doesn’t require your undivided attention then these are good options. However, if you’re looking for something deeper and eerily plausible like Black Mirror, then I would not recommend The One.
